Rick De Boer

Independent Bookseller

It seems strange now to think that I hadn’t even
heard of The Book People only a short time ago! I come from Australia
originally and have spent the past few years working as a primary school
teacher in Russia, Kazakhstan and Qatar. I met my English wife overseas and we
settled back in Kent with our two small children in the summer of 2013.

I wanted to do something different with my career and had always been
interested in working for myself. The idea of being a distributor for The Book
People appealed to me as the start up costs are low and unlike most new
businesses you can start making money immediately. Also, I enjoy reading myself
and sharing stories with my children. I also like driving and have really loved
exploring the Kent countryside, especially when the sun shines!

I enjoy meeting new people and am very ‘at home’ in a school environment, which
is a big part of the work. I am confident in talking about children’s
literature and helping staff to choose books that are suitable for different
topics they might be teaching.

The training was very thorough and support from Head Office has been great. My
wife came along too and we have been working together to get the business
started. There is always someone there to help and advise us with a very ‘hands
on’ approach.

I started distributing the books in January and hit the ground running. My
geographical knowledge of the areas was not great but that is quickly changing!
I have established routines now and am constantly looking for ways to improve
and become more efficient.  I set myself challenges to find new customers
and opportunities every day and am continually adapting and updating routes.

It has been hard work but that is not something I am afraid of and I have also
found it very rewarding. I realise that I still have a lot to learn and there
are always things that can be improved.  I am now working on expanding and
developing my business further. I am looking forward to the upcoming busy
Christmas season and seeing what challenges await!
